Many students, including myself, have bickered to some extent about the high price of books and how their cost can become an excuse of why not to attend college.
Even the ASCC has attempted to attack and address this continuous issue by only pitching ideas out there like the book exchange program. To my knowledge this has been attempted about two times before but has never been able to be executed, or at least not yet.
What some students are unaware of is that there are other alternatives besides the local book stores both here on and off campus.
But I think some of the bookstores have formed a cartel to oppress students and to drain their money by cutting holes in their pockets.
However, students have to think outside the box.
Nowadays, the internet has revolutionized the way we perform daily tasks and shop as a consumer.
The point being that books are expensive and that the internet, our most valued resource, provides the service of being able to purchase books at a cheaper price.
One of these sites is chegg.com.
The whole concept behind this website is actually unheard of, at least to me.
What it is, is a revolutionary website where students select the book they need and they rent them out at a low price, ideally.
With their revenue for the rentals, they plant trees in African countries and other deforested parts of the world.
After the semester, the textbook is returned and a tree is planted from the money that was brought in.
However, the credibility is another role that affects me sometimes from taking this path.
Some other websites, bidding sites, such as Ebay and Amazon provide another alternative with the security of receiving the product.
The idea behind these is that the buyer buys the book at the price they can afford and are willing to pay for the textbook.
It's basically where the students decide the price the book sells for.
One idea that has yet to be attempted is for a company, such as Borders, to branch out and provide low prices and alternatives for college students, which are not many.
Some action has been initiated to make the bookstore lower prices.
When compared to other local colleges, the prices here are lower due to the protest there has been over this.
To the students, keep on voicing your opinions about the book prices, its actually accomplishing something.
There is always a first time for everything.
